Yet Another Good Idea...

An idea from Darius!

His blog just turned one. Mine is, uh, about one, give or take. Although I pity anyone who has been reading from the beginning. I was pretty poor at rough drafting back then.

He has asked his readers - especially those who don't usually comment - to tell him what they like about, and what they want from, his blog.

So, hey I'll post the same question. What do you like? What do you hate? What do you want to see more of?

Honestly, I mostly do this for my own pieces of mind, but a mind is an astonishingly flexible thing. If it turns out that everyone hates foo type of article, I'll avoid writing them. Don't worry about my fragile ego. I'm a pretty durable guy.

So post! Now's your chance to change the world!

And while you're at it, tell me your favorite colors.

Try not to be such a dick when you're making points of theory, phrases like "its wronge" tend to leave a bad taste of elitism. That said, theres been times when you've been quite right about such such points, but you'd be better recieved it you'd examine the relative strengths and weaknesses, instead.

Also, you should categorize your side-bar and link your best posts related to PAC, multi-player design, or whatever. Particularly that series you did on PAC a ways ago.

And you should participate in Corvus' round tables, they tend to be fairly intersting and may get you more traffic.

I'm looking to be in MA area next week, do you want to meet up for some lunch and talk shop? I could even do a proper interview about HMH if you're interested, but thats totally optional.

I like your ideas and your writing. What I don't like is that you tend to write so often that I can't keep up. That's not a flaw, so I wouldn't ask you to change it. Other than that, there's not much I can say. Your blog is small, and not very flashy, and that works. The sort of tips I'd give you wouldn't really be appropriate for what you're trying to do, since I consider the medium as important as the content. The sort of tips I'd give you would mostly consist of all sorts of nifty Javascript tricks which can be used for artistic purposes that you'd never be interested in.

Oh, and I don't have a favorite color. There's a place for every shade of every color; how much I like a color at any given time depends on how well it serves its purpose.

I never read your blog, and I have no favorite color.

More updates over on Machine City would be nice. I like to poke my nose into other people's business with suggestions and ideas.

As for your blog here...the 'previous posts' links are pretty darn useless, since you can just scroll down the page an see them anyway. I'd go with Patrick's suggestion and link to some of your longer posts about PAC and such.

And my favorite color is black, the absence of color.

Well... I've been meaning to read your blog for about a month now. I'm the kind of person that WILL go back and read your archives. It will just take me a while. Anyway, I wound up reading your stuff on Story vs. Gameplay and I'm hooked. You have some great views that challenge the commonly accepted norms and make me think about how I can makes games better.

Keep posting. And I like Blues and Greens (usually the richer, darker colours).

Patrick: Ahhhh. Yeah, I'm a dick. That's something I'll try to work on, but given that I've been a dick for about twenty years, it might be a losing battle. :)

I'll be in Worcester next week. I don't have a car, but if you keep that in mind, I have no problem with a luncheon. It could be fun.

Post links... I may have time for that next week.

Mory: Yeah, I try to limit myself, but it comes out of my brain and insists on being written down!

I try to put little headers in some of them to tell what they're about: feel free to skip anything you don't have any interest in.

Darius: You're a friendless newb, so that doesn't matter.

Duncan: We share favorite colors! You also have a pretty good blog. I just started on it.

Kestrel: Next week. Big updates.

I overapplied myself in the past three weeks. Foolish me! I'm cutting back, by Friday I'll be free! Freeeeeeee!

Oh, Duncan: Seriously, my earlier posts really suck. I'm not even joking.

I'm a daily reader and have been since a month or two after you started the blog. I originally came across it in one of your posts at the IGDA boards.

I think a sidebar linking to important posts would be a very good idea. I know there are times when I'll be reading a post and want to get a refresher on what you mean by a certain term and it can be tough searching through the archives for it.

I have no favourite colour because a single colour is effectively nothing on its own. Colour gains its power from the company of other colours.

And just for the record, I like that you're opinionated (ie. a dick). Even when I disagree with what you're saying.

I also think that categorizing your posts by topic would be a great help to readers, especially for when you reference a previous essay in one of your posts.

I notice sometimes you put up a big essay and then ask for comments, but whether I agree or not, I just don't feel like I have anything to add. It seems that you've done a lot of thinking on the matter and that you have every angle covered. That's great for an essay, but if you really want to start a discussion, you should stop short of a conclusion, and ask readers to provide examples that can be discussed. If it turns out that the discussion is going in the wrong direction, then you can step in with your own conclusion.

I'm with the people who don't have favorite colors. Colors are only good or bad in combination with other colors.
