Its a crazy thing to actually see such a city in its full breadth and sprawl. I recently saw a movie called "Chronos" by Ron Flick (guy behind Kowaniquatsi, or whatever its called), it featured a sped-up helicopter view of LA at night, similar huanting sense of massive awareness and a complete shallow image recieved simulataneously.
