tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11758224.post3418217987958296886..comments2023-09-28T07:23:51.376-07:00Comments on ProjectPerko: Neither Good nor EvilCraig Perkohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13173752470581218239noreply@blogger.comBlogger1125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11758224.post-62585927396021423702012-03-16T00:19:47.690-07:002012-03-16T00:19:47.690-07:00While this looks like a good way to personalize yo...While this looks like a good way to personalize your avatar, I guess one of the advantages of the games is active player role.<br />In most games, ideally, you can be the hero, actively influence the world around you, and not just follow orders and sometimes whine "my boss sucks" (there's real life for that).<br /><br />On the other hand, it's funny to see how your decisions in Dragon Age or Mass Effect are totally misinterpreted by your party members, so a way to communicate your intentions, at least to those characters you care about, would be nice.<br /><br />The most straightforward (and the least elegant) way to resolve this ambiguity was in Planescape: Torment, where you often had pairs of actions and intentions, like:<br />- I'll do this [say truth]<br />- I'll do this [lie]<br />- I won't do this [say truth]<br />- I won't do this [bluff]<br /><br />For now the most interesting choices for me were those with lesser evil. When both decisions are "evil", or rather both have negative consequences. In some cases, Mass Effect series got that right.<br /><br />You can construct any rationale behind your decision (i.e. kill a guy because of impulsiveness, moral code, revenge, justice, greed - but kill anyway), but your action will be judged by the consequences, not by your reaction or justification. Seems pretty fair to me.<br /><br />In Mass Effect 3, Shepard doesn't need to explain why he [did or did not some or other thing] in Mass Effect 1 or how does he feel about it. It's just done, and now everyone has to live with consequences somehow, everybody is free to react to this any way he or she wants.
